The labeling and promotion of your dietary supplement products are the most visible ways that the Food & Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission can track your compliance with federal regulations. A perfect complement to “Dietary supplement labeling compliance,” this course will go over in detail each type of permitted claim that is available to you and the criteria for making each one. We will cover FDA and FTC standards for substantiation. We will also go over how to build the substantiation for each claim that FDA and FTC require you to hold to ensure your claims are accurate and not misleading, and how you can avoid making implied claims which could lead to regulatory enforcement. Participants will learn how public knowledge of FTC and FDA enforcement actions affects business performance, enforcement/litigation trends and other responsibilities of dietary supplement manufacturers such as structure/function claim notification.

The purpose of this training is to understand the intent of the requirements for the NSF/ANSI 455-2 good manufacturing practice (GMP) for dietary supplements standard. For those wondering "what is GMP?" or "what does GMP stand for?", in full form, GMP is good manufacturing practice. GMP encompasses a set of guidelines that ensure consistent quality and safety in product manufacturing. This GMP standard, which aligns with current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) in the dietary supplement industry, is based on FDA regulations, specifically 21 CFR Part 111 requirements, other regulations (normative references), retailer criteria, and industry best practices. The criteria in this standard were structured to follow a seven (7) systems approach to ensure comprehensive GMP compliance in the dietary supplement industry. In this training, we will discuss how to prepare for an audit at your dietary supplements manufacturing facility.

We will not be discussing in-depth the need for documented procedures and evidentiary records, as this is well documented within the standard as well as the prerequisite dietary supplement GMP training and is always best practice for quality assurance and quality control.

This course is designed to give people who want to improve quality in their facility — and who already have a basic understanding of the dietary supplement GMPs — the knowledge and skills necessary to qualify suppliers. Since the evaluation of all types of suppliers often involves auditing, this course will incorporate a fresh look at the process of auditing and the skills and techniques necessary to get the most from these activities. The auditing skills and techniques learned in this course are independent of the type of auditing or the standard being audited. These skills and techniques will be useful when conducting internal audits as well as performing audits of suppliers.
